Discipleship One

Discipleship is one of the foundational ministries at Decatur Baptist. It is the first step in getting grounded in the word of God, the cornerstone for developing spiritual growth, and the entryway to ministry.

The process of discipleship is facilitated by the transference of spiritual maturity from one believer to another by utilizing our 14 lessons as the vehicle to establish a foundation. These lessons are not designed for group Bible studies, as evangelistic tracts, or to make an opportunity for social, political or educational debate. In addition, they are not a way for the discipler to brainwash, manipulate or control the disciple.

The discipleship lessons are designed to systematically take the disciple through the building blocks of the word of God by studying and applying 14 key, fundamental areas of the Christian faith. The intent is to accomplish four primary Biblical goals. These goals are consistent with our mission as a church to mold each individual into the image of Christ and mobilize all to minister the word of God to the world.

Goals of Discipleship:

  • Establish the disciple in the Word of God
  • Establish the disciple in the Fellowship of believers
  • Establish the disciple in the Structure of the Local Church
  • Establish the disciple in the Ministry of Christ

Philosophy and Goals Of Discipleship Class

After completing life on life discipleship you are ready to get a deeper meaning into the Biblical goals and philosophy of the ministry. By examining Old and New Testament scripture and the life of Jesus and Paul we will have a clearer understanding of why discipleship is Biblical and important. At DBC we ask that you have at least completed lesson 12 of life on life discipleship to attend this class. Also, you must attend this class before you start discipling someone else.

Discipleship can be defined in one brief statement: "Being willing to give the ministry away."  Discipleship is a "buzz word" today in churches.  2 Timothy 2:2 tells us to train faithful men (give ministry away), who will train faithful men (give ministry away), who will train faithful men...  The moment one stops training faithful men (giving the ministry away), discipleship stops.

When Jesus said to teach all nations, He was saying to  disciple the nations.  One person can do only so much, and if that person has not reproduced themselves in others (discipleship), then the church or the ministry can grow only to the size of that person's potential.  If leaders disciple others to be leaders, then there is no limit to what a church can accomplish.   Senior Pastor - Doug Ripley
